Insert Fibres

You will find a brief explanation below, about each fibre that can be found in our cloth nappy range.

Organic Fibres

Hemp-Cotton

One of the main advantages of hemp-cotton is its incredible absorbency and breathability, which makes it ideal for cloth nappy inserts. This absorbency is due to the unique structure of the hemp fiber, which allows it to hold up to three times its weight in water.

Another reason we love hemp-cotton is because hemp plants require much less water and fewer pesticides than cotton plants, making them a more sustainable choice. Additionally, hemp-cotton fabric is biodegradable, meaning it won't sit in landfills for hundreds of years like synthetic fabrics.

However, whilst hemp is truly an amazing material, on its own, it can be fairly rough. Therefore, mixing it with cotton allows it to have greater structure, as well as softness, making it more comfortable on the bum!

Hemp-Cotton is used in our:

  • Newborn Nappies;
  • Classic Nappies; and
  • Ultimate Nappies

Bamboo-Cotton

Bamboo-cotton is another fibre known for its absorbency and environmentally-friendly properties. Bamboo is incredibly fast-growing and requires significantly less water and pesticides than other materials to manufacture.

Another benefit of bamboo-cotton is its softness. Compared to traditional cotton, bamboo-cotton fibers have a smooth and rounded surface that feels gentle on the skin.

Compared to Hemp, Bamboo is quicker to absorb and wick away moisture, which is why we usually recommend using it as the insert closest to baby's bottom. However, Hemp is better at retaining the moisture, so when paired with Bamboo, it makes the ultimate combo!

Bamboo-Cotton is used in our:

  • Newborn Nappies;
  • Classic Nappies; and
  • Ultimate Nappies

Synthetic Fibres

Microfibre

Microfibre is often found in cloth nappies as it is a synthetic material that can absorb moisture quickly and is ideal for babies who are "flooding" their nappies or prone to nappy rash.

Microfibre is also lightweight, quick to dry and often a cost-effective alternative to organic fibre inserts.

However, it should be noted that Microfibre, whilst quick to absorb, is also prone to compression leaks (when pressure is applied, moisture can leak out). Also due to its phenomenal "moisture-wicking" properties, it should not be placed directly next to the skin as it can dry-out the skin.

Microfibre can be very beneficial for quick-absorption, quick-drying but ideally should be paired with an organic fibre such as Bamboo so it does not easily leak or dry out baby's skin.

Microfibre is used in our:

  • Beginners Nappies (although it is always sandwiched in between bamboo fibres).
