Washing cloth nappies is simple when you follow a consistent routine. Here's how to keep your nappies clean, fresh, and long-lasting while reducing the risk of ammonia buildup and nappy rash.

✅ Cloth Nappy Wash Routine

1. Dry Pail After Use

  • Shake solids into toilet and rinse off excess
  • Store dirty nappies in a breathable basket (holes for airflow)
  • For Night Nappies:
    • Option 1: Hand wash in hot water with a small amount of detergent
    • Option 2: Go straight to pre-wash — wash within 24 hours at 60°C

2. Pre-Wash (Every 1–2 Days)

  • Short cycle (40–60°C)
  • Use half the recommended dose for heavily-soiled loads
  • Spin Speed: Up to 1000rpm
  • Return to dry pail until main wash (no need to dry in between)

3. Main Wash (Every 2–3 Days)

  • Long cycle (2–3 hours) at 40–60°C
  • Use the full recommended dose
  • Spin Speed: Up to 1000rpm
  • Machine should be 2/3 to 3/4 full mid-cycle

Tip: Add small, light-coloured items (e.g. baby clothes, face washers) to bulk out your load

4. Drying Nappies

  • Inserts: Line dry in the sun or tumble dry on low heat
  • Shells: Line dry in the shade or use low heat only (to protect the water-resistant laminate)

⚠️ What to Avoid & Best Practices

  • Fabric Softeners: May reduce insert absorbency, so avoid if possible.
  • Dark Colours: May cause colour run and stain nappies – avoid in bulk wash loads
  • Nappy Creams & Balms:
    • Safe to use if:
      • Washing in warm-hot water
      • Using a mainstream (non-eco) detergent
      • Machine is properly loaded for effective agitation
    • If balm contains zinc or petroleum, use a reusable or disposable liner to protect inserts
    • Test first using a stay-dry liner
  • Hook & Loop Nappies:
    • Always secure hook and loop wash tabs before washing
    • Flip the back waterproof flap inside out to secure wing tabs during wash
